On the Tech Transforms podcast, sponsored by Dynatrace, we talk to some of the most prominent influencers shaping critical government technology decisions.
Can zero trust and positive user experiences coexist within the government?
On the one hand, the United States has mandates such as the White House Executive Order (EO) 14028 on “Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity.” This mandate directs federal agencies to advance toward a zero-trust architecture that “eliminates implicit trust in any one element, node, or service.” On the other hand, Dynatrace research indicates that government leaders are increasingly prioritizing positive user experience, with two-thirds of respondents saying this is “very” important.
On Episode 51 of the Tech Transforms podcast, we tackle zero trust and user experience. United States Patent and Trademark Office Chief Information Officer Jamie Holcombe reveals how agencies can have the best of both worlds as they pursue IT modernizations: zero trust enforcement that does not arrive at the expense of user experience.
“Trust nothing and no one” security policies can enhance user experiences
Within the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), there are five Zero Trust Maturity Model pillars: identity, devices, networks, applications/workloads, and data. The teams associated with these pillars use expansive observability to help them establish optimal digital experience monitoring. The result is frictionless, secure interactions. As a result, agencies that implement zero trust can enhance user experiences, not diminish them.
During the conversation, Holcombe focused on the following key areas to accomplish exceptional and secure digital interactions:
- Pay attention to all five pillars, not just the “identity” pillar.
- Extend authentication controls for what really matters.
- Overcome user resistance before it even occurs.
