As part of our commitment to leveraging OpenMetrics standards and ensuring state-of-the-art observability for infrastructure and modern technology stacks, Dynatrace has partnered with Amazon to enable you to ingest metrics from Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus (AMP).
What is Prometheus and how does it work?
Prometheus is an open-source monitoring and alerting toolkit for services and applications that run in containers. Developed first at SoundCloud, the project became part of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and has steadily become the industry standard for both containerized infrastructure and classic implementation scenarios, especially within Kubernetes clusters.
Prometheus collects metrics from a number endpoints that expose metrics in the OpenMetrics format. It offers a flexible multidimensional data model that’s based on key-value pairs and a potent query language (PromQL). Prometheus components include client libraries for application code instrumentation, special-purpose exporters for popular services, and the optional Prometheus server for orchestrating service discovery and data storage.
So it’s no surprise that Amazon has announced the Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus (AMP) which supports open metric collection and brokerage from systems and applications that run on AWS.
Dynatrace support for AMP
Dynatrace now provides support for the Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus. This integration is ideal for organizations that have standardized on AWS and need enterprise-grade support for adopting OpenMetrics standards. You can easily extract Prometheus metrics from AMP into your Dynatrace Managed or SaaS environment and make them available for further analysis, charting, and alerting.
The Dynatrace AMP extension enables you to easily ingest Prometheus metrics into Dynatrace. You can query for metrics and transform results to gain desired insights. For more complex queries and aggregated values, you can use the native PromQL query language.
Prometheus declarative extensions
Dynatrace supports a variety of OpenMetric sources—AMP is just one of them. In fact, Dynatrace can ingest metrics from any Prometheus endpoint, and we’re about to make this substantially simpler with a new class of Dynatrace extensions. What stands out with these extensions is that they use a declarative approach to specify what needs to be monitored and how to do it. With declarative extensibility, you get full context, which includes Dynatrace SmartScape topological mapping, alerting, dashboards, and unified analysis. With this approach, you can focus on observability outcomes, not the mechanics of making it work.
