Update: Since September 30, 2019, the Dynatrace web UI does no longer support Internet Explorer 11.
We value your security and user experience, so please switch to a Dynatrace-supported browser as soon as possible.
Why are we doing this?
At Dynatrace we strive for excellence, customer value, and security. We want to continue developing a modern, effective, and intuitive UI that’s even faster than the UI we provide today. We’ve decided to discontinue support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 for several reasons, including some important security considerations:
- IE 11 no longer receives major updates, including security updates since Microsoft released the Edge browser in 2015.
- IE 11, by default, supports TLS version 1.0 only, which can cause serious damage and security issues. You can read about a few examples here.
- The old architecture of IE 11 makes our UI work take up to 5x longer than it does with modern browser versions.
- IE 11 slows down our ability to create value for you. It takes a lot of time to make things work just for IE 11, including a lot of tweaks to keep the same functionality. Development and testing are obviously a big effort, the code is error-prone, and IE 11 forces us into serious limitations that affect solutions for other browsers. We receive dozens of critical bugs just because of issues related to IE 11.
Luckily, most of our customers have already switched to other, modern browsers. Ending support for old browsers allows us to focus on faster, modern, and more secure and innovative solutions.
The end of the development phase for IE 11 (June 30, 2019) will be accompanied by a new requirement for a web client to support the TLS 1.2 protocol, which is fully supported by default by all modern browsers.
This requirement also applies to API usage. Dynatrace will no longer support connections that are encrypted with TLS versions 1.0 and TLS 1.1. This is due to security vulnerabilities present in these versions.
What does this mean?
This is a two-phase project:
- Phase one: The end of development for IE 11 and the end of support for TLS versions 1.0 and 1.1, effective June 30, 2019
- Phase two: The end of support for IE 11, effective September 30, 2019
Phase one: No new development
The Dynatrace web UI will support IE 11 until June 30, 2019. After that date, we’ll stop development for IE 11. This doesn’t mean that everything will immediately stop working on this date, but we’ll stop testing new releases on IE 11, so we can’t guarantee the best experience on IE 11, and some functionality may stop working. Access for IE 11 won’t be blocked yet, but we’ll stop accepting bugs reported for IE 11.
Also, beginning July 1, 2019, you’ll be required to use the TLS 1.2 protocol on any browser you use to access the Dynatrace web UI and the Dynatrace REST API.
Phase two: IE 11 access will be blocked
After September 30, 2019, we’ll remove all code that supports IE 11, and access from this browser will be blocked. You won’t be able to use the Dynatrace web UI on IE 11 after this time.
Will I be affected?
If you plan to keep using IE 11 after June 30, 2019, the answer is yes.
If you use any of our supported browsers, the answer is no.
If you use a legacy HTTP client to integrate with the Dynatrace REST API, the answer is yes.
What do I need to do?
Please switch to a Dynatrace-supported browser as soon as possible!
At the same time, starting June 30, 2019, we’re going to require the TLS 1.2 protocol be enabled on your browser. This option is enabled by default on modern browsers. To enable this option for IE 11, you might need to perform a system update and manual activation.
If you prefer (or are required) to use a Microsoft browser, please switch to the latest version of Microsoft Edge. Edge is not only much safer and faster but it’s also going to be more compatible with other modern browsers, thanks to the switch to the Chromium engine. A couple of months ago, Microsoft announced that “Microsoft Edge will now be delivered and updated for all supported versions of Windows and on a more frequent cadence,” so it won’t be limited to Windows 10 alone. You can read more in this Microsoft blog post.
When it comes to Dynatrace REST API integration, please make sure that your HTTP client uses TLS 1.2 protocol.
